PIGEON SHOOTING.
South Island Championship at Leeston. The South Island live pigeon championship was held at Leeston this afternoon under the auspices of the Kllesmcre Hun Club. There were twenty competitors in the championship, in which the conditions were twenty one birds off 28yds. A sweepstake was held in conjunction with the big event, and in this there were twenty-one comUf.titors. The weather was ideal, but conditions for shooting were tricky, as there was a fairly strong south-west cross wind. There were shooters from all parts of Canterbury, while G. V. Edge and CWilson were present from Bluif. K. Groome was present from the North Island and shot in the sweep, as he was not eligible for the championship. Also competing was A. N. Turner, secretary of the New Zealand Gun Club’s Association. Officials in charge were: Mr F. L. Graham, president of the Ellesmere Club, Mr It. A. Burgess, secretary, and Mr A. Prestney, of Rangiora, was official referee. C. Jamieson, who won the title at Rangiora when it was last shot for in 1931. was not competing this year. Turner was the winner after a fine performance in which he scored the possible of 21 birds. M. Anderson was second with 19 and R. 2. Taylor third with 18 birds. Detailed results were:— A. N. He takes £l2 12s, Anderson was second with £6 6s and Taylor third with £3 15s 6d. The other competitors who retired when they had four misses were G. Watkins. C. T. V. Edge, E. Groome, K. A. Washbourne, H. Washbourne .1. Winchester, F. Brightling, T. Gordon, C. Wilson, L. Lemon, S. Anderson, G. Franks, T. Corbett, T. Harrison, R. Arnst, P. Chamberlain, F. Truscott, C. E. Browne. For shooters next week there will be the Christchurch Gun Club’s event at Sockburn. On Monday there will be the £SO twelve-bird pigeon championship, open to members of all affiliated clubs, while next Saturday the South Island sparrow championship twenty-one birds off 21yds—will be shot for. This will be open to shooters resident in the South Island.
