Gatherings Held in Town and Country. AFTERNOON AT SUMNER. Silks, satins, laces, woodware, glass, ivory, silver, brass, china and wool, vied with one another for pride of place in the collection of antiques displayed in the Sumner Presbyterian Schoolroom, when Mesdames S. Sherrard, A. C. Wells and 11. J. Walker were the hostesses at an afternoon in aid of church funds. After a welcome had been accorded the guests, the Rev W. Martin returned thanks on behalf of the Church Committee. Numerous articles, including a well preserved wedding dress, over two hundred years old, were displayed and every article was worthy i of attention. A musical programme was contributed by Mesdames W. J. Duff, ; G. Gerrard, Davis and F. N. Kerr, Miss Nancy Young being accompanist. Miss Melba Martin gave an exhibition of club swinging. The afternoon was a. financial success. Shaw and W. R. Urquhart. Party at Prebbleton. Miss Barnes, of Prebbleton, was the guest of honour at a surprise party at her residence. on Thursday afternoon. Miss Barnes, who will leave shortly for Sydney, on an extended holiday, -was the recipient of a travelling case and other gifts. On making the presentation, Mrs R. Macpherson expressed the esteem in which Miss Barnes was held by those present and wished her a happy voyage and safe return. Miss Barnes suitably responded. Community singing was held, followed by afternoon tea. Amr-ng those present were: Mesdames Clifford, Hunt, Brether.ton. W. Gallagher, Macpherson, Varley and Yeatman; Misses Amy Clifford, Barnes and Annie and Alma Smith. Linen Evening. A linen evening arranged by the many friends of Miss Daphne Hawthorne was given at the home of Mr and Mrs L. Hawthorne, Picton Avenue, Riccarton, on Thursday. The reception rooms were beautifully decorated with vases of arum lilies and birch. The guest of the evening, whose marriage to Mr Mason Grainger will take place shortly, received many useful gifts for her future home. Games and dancing were enjoyed, the pianists being Messrs F. Comyns and R. Diedrich. Those present included:—Mesdames D Hawthorne. F. Comyns, E. S. Bedard C. Kemp, T. Ball, F. Mel Iyer, D. Wallis, R. Mitchell and A. Staunton, Misses Daphne Hawthorne, Dorothy Hawthorne, Alba Bennett, Lily Hawkings, Alice Bennett, Ella Jones, C. Sturroek, Mary Hall, Joy M’Laughlin and Eileen Mitchell.

Surprise Party. A surprise party organised by Messrs W. L. White and H. G. Lawrence recently visited the home of Mr and Mrs E. Ward, Swannanoa. The barn was cleared and proved an ideal hall for the games, competitions and dancing. Music was supplied by Mr H. Winter, Misses Heather Ward, Elaine Martyn, Joan Smith and Mr W. L. White, and Messrs H. G. Lawrence and W. L. White gave humorous items. Competitions were won by Miss Bernice Kelly and Mr G. Armstrong. Among those present were:—Mesdames E. Ward, A. Ward, H. Shaw gave an enjoyable dance in the Parish Hall, Amberley, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their son, Allan. The hall was artistically decorated for the occasion by Miss Joy Shaw and her friends. Mr W. 11. Evans (Bay of Plenty), an uncle, proposed the toast of the guest of honour. Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Bailey’s orchestra (Rangiora), and Mr Ross Coleman and Mr Marshall Hunter were M.C.’s. Ambulance Dance A successful dance in aid of the division's uniform funds was held on Thursday night by St Matthew’s Ambulance and Nursing Divisions of the St John Ambulance Brigade and was attended by about sixty couples. Winners of the competitions were Miss E. Gill and Mr C. Cooper and Miss J. Boardman and Mr L. Genet. Mr A. Wylie was M.C., and Ron Wallis’s band supplied the music. Among those present were: Mrs T. A kitchen evening, given by Mesdames Davis and Pepper, in honour of Miss Rita Davis, who is to be married shortly, was held in the Druids’ Hall, Woolston, recently. The evening was spent in dancing and items. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss P. Bolt and Mr A. Davis. Items were given by Mrs C. Chapman and Messrs J. Davis and M’Sweeny. Mr J. Davis proposed the toast of the guest of honour, and Mr V. Pepper responded on her behalf. Mr C. White supplied the music. Miss Joyce Kolhman played extras and Mr Jack Davis was M.C.
