POPULAR MONTHLY.
That old proverb “ Nothing succeeds like success ” applies well to the reorganised. “ Railways Magazine,” a bright monthly. The contents of each issue are planned to give New Zealanders very pleasant impressions of their own country, in letterpress and pictures, from many viewpoints. In the August issue Mr James Cowan continues his series of “Famous New Zealanders ” with a colourful story of the life of that famous Maori chief Rewi Maniapoto, the hero of Orakau; Mr C. A. L. Treadwell gives further of his “ Famous New Zealand Trials,” with the drama of Lionel Terry; Mr Ken Alexander, sparkling humorist, presents “ Fishing and Suchlike Lies,” with appropriate drawings of his own; Mr Will Lawson gives another of his delightful railway stories in “ The Commissioner’s Special.” Other notable features are “Milford From the Sea” (Miss Elsie K. Morton); “World Affairs” (Mr E. Vivian Hall); “On the Waterfront” (Mr Leo Fanning); “Wisdom of the Maori” and an illustrated article on Wellington’s new railway station. A good selection of original New Zealand verse, crisp and breezy paragraphs, special sections for woman and children, and other interesting matter complete a very readable number.
