DENTIST’S GAMBLE.
U.S. Wheat Pit Mystery Man. CHICAGO, July 24. Edward Crawford practised dentistry in New Orleans until he made a share market “ clean up ” that gave him sufficient cash to commence large operations on the grain exchanges. Invading Chicago, he pyramided his profits in the recent “ bull ” market, and to-day was identified as the mysterious trader who was holding so much corn and wheat that the brokers did not dare to sell him out last week. His individual holdings on margin exceeded 20,000,000 bushels, and for two days last week the market was forced to suspend operations for fear Crawford’s unwieldy holdings, if dumped back into the pit, would cause a terrific crash. Before trading was resumed, Crawford was declared insolvent, and debarred by the Chicago Board of Trade from further trading. Other gamblers who are overloaded by from 3.000,000 to 6,000,000 bushels will probably be suspended as they fail to pay margin calls.
