G.N. CANDIDATES.

. No. 9—Lucess. LUCESS, b g, lOyrs, by Lucullus from Musketry. Owner-trainer, W. J. M'Lean, Matamata. Lucess had a quiet time in his youth. Four unplaced runs at three years, one at four, and three at five years comprised his opening performances. As a six-vear-old he had nine more unsuccessful starts before his first win arrived. That was in the Hunt Club Steeplechase at Ellerslie at the 1930 Great Northern meeting. He also ran two seconds in steeplechases at that fixture and was runner-up in the Waipa Hunters’ Steeplechase. In the 1930-31 season, Lucess won a hurdle race at Ellerslie at Easter and followed it up with a win at Avondale. He was second to Prince Lu in the Great Northern Hurdles and third to Master Lu and Wako King in the Great Northern Steeplechase. He afterwards failed at Trentham. Lucess was at Riccarton in August, 1931. With 9st 91b, he was third to Snowfall and Paris in the Grand National Steeplechase. He fell in the Lincoln Steeplechase and did not race again until February. Twice unplaced on the flat, he next ran third over hurdles at Ellerslie and over fences at Te Rapa. With 9st 61b, he missed a place in the Great Northern Hurdle race, but won the Remuera Hurdle at that meeting and was runner-up with 9st 121 b to Billy Boy in the Winter Steeplechase, with Copey 9st 111 b third. He was unplaced in July on the flat at Riccarton and in the South Canterbury Steeplechase. In the season just concluded, Lucess with lOst 4lb fell in the Grand National Steeplechase when going nicely five furlongs from home. He also came down in the Beaufort, but was second to Royal Visitor in the Lincoln. He was fourth over hurdles at Ellerslie in November. In March, he was unplaced in hurdle races at Te Aroha and Te Rapa, but was second in a similar event on the concluding day at Te Rapa. At Ellerslie in April, he was fourth in both the Brighton Hurdle and the Autumn Steeplechase. With 9st 61b he was beaten a length by Makeup list 31b in the King Country Steeplechase, three miles, at Te Rapa in May, and on the second day was runner-up with 9st 111 b to Wiltshire lOst lib in the Kawhia Steeplechase, two miles and a half. He ran unplaced in the Great Northern Hurdles with 9st 71b, but won the Remuera Hurdles again. He fell in the Campbell Hurdles. In all. Lucess has started 57 times for five wins, nine seconds, six thirds and 37 times unplaced. As he has run third in the event and was going well until he fell in the race last August, he must be given a chance.
