ROUND THE SUBURBS.

St John s Men’s Club. The St John’s Men’s Club, Woolston, held a ladies’ evening in the Parish Room last Thursday. Mr Webb gave an interesting lantern lecture on " Early Canterbury.” After supper cribbage, euchre, five hundred and bridge Were played. Mr S. IT. Johns, president of the club, thanked Mr Webb for his address and the ladies for their attendance. Woolston Library. The Woolston Public Library Committee held a social and dance in the Druids’ Hall. Woolston, on Saturday evening. Prize-winners were Mesdames Alexander, Jackson, Messrs Johns and Hill. A Monte Carlo one-step was won by Mr and Mrs O’Neil. Mr C. White supplied the dance music and Mr C. Lilburne was M.C. Lance at Woolston. St Anne’s School Committee, Woolston, held a social and dance recently. Mrs J. W. Smith, Miss G. Thompson and Messrs R. Vogel and T. Pooley were the prize-winners. Banfield and Robinson’s orchestra supplied the music, and Mr M’Cambridge was M.C. Spreydon Literary Society. The Spreydon Literary Society met on Saturday evening. An interesting lecture on the “ Psychology of Fear ” was given by Mr H. Crawford Somerset, 8.A., of Oxford. After a discussion of the subject Mr Somerset entertained the members by reading Harold Chapin’s one-act play, “The Philosopher of Butterbiggins." The Rev A. Simmonds thanked the speaker, and supper was served by the committee.
