ARTHUR’S PASS TRIP.
Large Number of Passengers From Christchurch. Steady drizzling rain, which later cleared off somewhat, greeted the large number of passengers who patronised the second railway excursion to Arthur’s Pass yesterday. Little snow was encountered by hikers on the various tracks, snow being visible only on the higher peaks and in patches in sheltered positions. The previous heavy fall of snow had practically melted, and skiing and tobogganing were consequently out of the question. A total of 289 people made the trip. Of these 87 were from Ashburton and the remaining 202 were from Christchurch and surrounding districts. The special train conveying the Ashburton excursionists connected with the Christchurch contingent at Rolleston. In spite of the unpleasant conditions prevailing, all the passengers thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The train left Christchurch at 8 a.m. on the outward journey to the Pass. On arrival at Arthur’s Pass shortly after noon, many of the excursionists, despite the rain, set out for various destinations. One party tackled the steep climb to Avalanche Peak, about fifty attempting this hazardous trip. Others preferred to walk along the track in the direction of Otira. When about a quarter of the distance was covered, however, the rain commenced in earnest, eventually compelling, the trampers to return and seek the warmth and cojnfort of the carriages. The party which attacked Avalanche Peak set themselves a perilous undertaking. The ground and rocks- \vere wet and slippery, making a secure foothold difficult to obtain. The return trip was commenced at 4.30, the train reaching Christchurch just before 8 p.m.
