Mr Arthur Henderson’s return to Parliament is practically assured through the Clay Cross Labour Party selecting him to contest the vacancy caused by Mr C. Duncan's death. At the last election there was a majority for the Labour candidate in the Clay Cross electorate of 9552. The late Mr Duncan was first elected for Clay Cross in 1922. Mr Arthur Henderson, until defeated for Burnley in 1931 by RearAdmiral GordonCampbell, had sat in Parliament, with brief interruptions, since 1903. He was a member of Mr Lloyd George’s War Cabinet, and held the offices of President of the Board of Education and Minister of Pensions. He was Home Secretary in the first and Foreign Secretary in the second Labour Government. On the formation of the present National Government, Mr Henderson, who is secretary of the Labour Party, refused to join Mr Ramsay MacDonald and Mr Snowden (later Viscount Snowden) and became leader of the Labour Opposition. At the election he was defeated and Mr George Lansbury became leader of the Labour Opposition in the House.
