Police Protection.
Dear Sir,—Christchurch has been the scene of an outrage in which an armed hold-up man has seriously wounded a publi servant. But no trace of the criminal hayet been found. Another armed and masked man —perhaps it was the same person—also made his appearance in another part of the city, when a storekeeper was alarmed. Now another case has occurred, in which a masked man alarmed two women in a Papanui home. One realise the handicaps under which the police work, and then, too, these outrages may not bo the work of one man, but what special st*eps have been taken to guard citizens in the suburbs? It will be recalled that when the “ firebug ” scare occurred a few years ago the local police were reinforced and special patrols were made throughout the city and suburbs. Though the ultimate decision will rest with the police, some such precautions as I have mentioned would reassure nervous citizens.—l am, etc., WATCHDOG.
