Passing It On. The contention that the Post and Telegraph Department had not passed on to the public the salary reduction imposed on the staff was made by Mr C. Jackson (Wairarapa). at a meeting of the executive of the Farmers’ Union. A resolution was passed urging the P. and T. Department to give a rebate of 20 per cent on rural mail delivery fees. He thought that the rebate was a suitable way in which the cut could be passed on. Possible Seaweed Industry. An investigation into the possibility of developing a seaweed industry in New Zealand for the production of paraffin oil. ammonia, potash, soda and iodine, in addition to providing work for the unemployed, was urged by Miss L. M. Cranwell in the course of a lecture on “ Seaweeds and Their Uses,” at the War Memorial Museum at Auckland. The formation of the coast in New Zealand was quite suitable for the cultivation of seaweed, and as an example of the extent to which the industry had developed in Japan, Miss Cranwell said that the annua] revenue totalled £1,000,000, about a third of the by-products being exported.
