Mr H. Odell Elected to Council. MAJORITY OR 109 VOTES. The Citizens’ Association Candidas Mr H. Odell, was elected to the Rii carton Borough Council yesterday t fill the vacancy caused bv the resit nation of Mr W. Machin.' .Mr Ode defeated the Independent candidate Mr W. J. Edwards, by 109 votes in total poll of 947 valid votes. Mr Edwards polled a pronounce majority at the booth in th southern part of the borough, but a each of the other three booths M Odell had an easy lead. The pollinj was as follows: Bo °t h - Edwards. Odel Town Hall, Clarence Rd. 148 250 Holland’s Store 60 163 Puriri Street 30 99 Clarence Rd. marquee . . 181 16 Totals 419 528 lhere were five informal votes. The result was announced by the re turning officer (Mr R. Sarjeant) at 7.4= P-m. Mr Odell, addressing a small gather mg outside the Riccarton Town Hall, expressed gratification at his success The poll, he said, was an exceptionally good one when the state of the weather was considered. He thanked those who had worked for his return and said he would do his best to justify the confidence reposed in him He had been interested in the borough for years a nd had its best interests at heart. He congratulated Mr Edwards, who. he said, had exhibited great pluck and had polled very well for an independent. Mr Edwards thanked those who had supported him and said that had he been better known the result might possibly have been different. He congratulated Mr Odell, and expressed the hope that he would carry out his duties to the satisfaction of the people of the borough.
