(2). AUCKLAND BUSINESS. (Special to the ** Star.”) AUCKLAND, May 4. The unsatisfied demand for Government stocks on the Stock Exchange has resulted in prices of 4 per cents going above par. At the 3.15 p.m. call yesterday there was a sale at £IOO 12s 6d, but this valuation failed to hold, and this morning sales were made at £IOO ss. Subsequently there were still buyers at this figure. A parcel of 1940’s was available at £lOl. Colonial Sugars were quoted ex div with buyers at £54 10s. Holders asked £1 more. Pukemiro Collieries were again asked for at 19 s 6d, and Wellington
Woollens were available at £5 , ; 2s 6d. j The banking and insurance sections , showed few alterations. Waihis were • steady with buyers at £1 2s 6d, sellers j asking £1 3s 6d.

(Received May 4, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, May Apples are in good demand at a low r level of prices. Shipments brought by the Coptic, Rangitiki and Rotorua from New Zealand realised the following prices; Cox’s, 8s 6d to I ts; Jonathans, 8s 3d to 11s; Dunns, 9s 6d to 11s 3d; Delicious, 8s 6d to 10s 6d; London Pippins, 9s to 10s; Wolseleys, 8s 6d to 9s 6d. Bid RIVER GOLD MINES, LTD. The report for the month of April of Big River Gold Mines, Ltd., states:— Holidays during the month reduced the j working days to nineteen. No. 3 level—The ris-e above No. 1 south drive at 80 feet from the entrance has been advanced by 19 feet, total 28 feet. The lode has been somewhat disturbed by small breaks and faults; but has averaged IS inches in width of clean quartz. Pair gold has been seen in breaking. Leading stopes on north and south sides of this rise were com- f pleted and mullocked up for a length of ' about 4 0 feet, the lode averaging 18 : Inches in width. Winze below No. 1 South Drive at • 70 feet from the entrance—A windlass chamber 9ft x sft x Bft was cut out ! in the hanging wall, and winze sunk ! 8 feet. Lode in south end of winze 4 feet wide; but smaller in north end j owing to an intrusion of mullock reducing the average width to 2 feet 6 inches of clean quartz. Fair gold can be seen • in the stone, and the lode carries a j little water. Jones Rotef in intermediate drive , off rise at 50 feet above No. 3 level—A little stoping was done at i head of rise on stone averaging 5 feet ! in width, in which fine gold could be seen. Duggan’s Reef at No. 1 adit level, 184 feet from entrance—North-east drive on fault plante advanced 29 feet, total 90 feet. Nothing of importance was met with, and driving was suspend- ; ed. A south drive was then opened out ; on line of fault, and advanced 5 feet, at j which point what appears to be the ; south-easterly continuation of Duggan’s j Reef has just been met with. The full I width of the lode is not yet exposed; but 2 feet of clean, highly-mineralised ; quartz is showing in the face. Samples , are being forwarded for assay. Battery—Repair work on water race, • battery, and cyanide plant is now prac- | tically completed.
