BATH OF GOLD.

Cleanliness Next to Affluence. CAPE TOWN. April 24. An astonishing story has come to light in Johannesburg of a goldminer whose evening baths for twenty yeajs have netted him 20 ounces of gold. It appears that after each bath on leaving work, the miner collected the sediment and put it in a tank. He recently panned the stuff, and found that the tank must contain about 20 ounces of gold, worth not far short of £IOO. The question of ownership of the gold now arose. Major Mitchell, chief of tfie C.1.D., gave the official view. “ The position is unusual,” he brightly observed. “ The correct procedure, however, is to look on the gold as lost property, which, if unclaimed, vests in the State. The man who took the baths may be entitled to a reward, but, if he has any doubts, the accumulation should go to the police.” The problem has now been solved. The bather has tendered the sediment from his evening tubs to his employers, and various mines are settling between them who should receive the pay-dirt. A 10 per cent reward will probably go to the worker.
