RANGIORA WATER SUPPLY.
One result of the long spell of dry weather has been the fall of the water level in the wells from which Rangiora draws its supply for domestic and fire promotion purposes. The wells derive their supply from the Ashley River bypercolation through the deep shinglebed below the town. For several weeks past the river has been absolutely dry on the surface of its bed for three or four miles of its length above and below the railway bridge. A few feet below the surface, however, water could be found flowing through the shingle, and this coming to the surface in the lower reach of the river, formed a fair stream at the lower Ashley bridge. During the past day or two, however, as a result of the heavy rain in the hills, the river has a good stream flowing, and this should have the effect of raising the level of the water in the town wells. Past experience has proved that following a fresh in the river the water takes from three to four days to affect the wells.
