SERIOUS BUSH FIRE.
Flames Menace Station Near Kaikoura. A bush and grass fire which started early this morning on Mr John Mackle’s station in the Puhi Valley, near Kaikoura, rapidly became out of control in the raging nor’-west gale, and threatened to destroy the station house and outbuildings. Because the telephone lines in the district are down, particulars are vague, but a report from the Kaikoura Post Office stated that the fire was of a most serious nature. Hundreds of men were out fighting the flames, but were handicapped by the gale and the fact that the grass and bush was as dry as tinder. The district has been months without rain. Another fire swept a large area of land covered with scrubby bush and feed three miles away, at Waimanarara. The houses of Mr P. Smith and Mrs W. Smith were threatened, but the work of a large army of helpers was successful and the houses were saved.
