POMPADOUR’S HOME.
Historic Building is Now for Sale. (Special to the ” Star.”) LONDON. March 15. Nearl}' two centuries of French history are recalled bv the laconic statement on a board outside the Hotel des Reservoirs at Versailles that the building is for sale. After being the home of Mine, de Pompadour, it was associated with many national events. The famous cellar has already been sold. It is stated that the reserve price for the hotel will probably be 3,000.000 francs (over £34,000), says the “Daily Telegraph.” At different times the building was a warehouse for Crown furniture, Versailles Town Hall (1788-1790), and a court (1793-1800) in which aristocrats were condemned to the guillotine, and a prefecture (1800-1806). About 1871 it became an hotel, with a restaurant in which some of the best wine and cooking in France could be obtained. German princes stayed there in that year after the defeat of France. But it was as the hotel in which French political leaders and prominent people in society lunched when a French President was being elected that it became most famous in recent times.
