BRIDGE PURCHASED.

The Waimakariri Gorge Structure. At a meeting of the Malvern County Council this week, the Main Highways Board reported that it had purchased from the Railway Department the combined road and railway bridge over the Waimakariri Gorge, and that it would take control as from April 1, 1933. The arrangement at present in force with the Oxford and Malvern Counties for the payment of certain fixed sums annually must terminate. The Main Highways Board has decided that the maintenance subsidy for the bridge will be on the basis of £3 for £l, the Oxford and Malvern Counties to find the remaining 25 per cent of the actual maintenance cost between them.

It was pointed out that road users would now have the full rights at all times to use the structure and that the Main Highways Board had not asked the counties to meet any portion of the purchase price of the bridge.
