INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE.

Mr Silas M’Alister has announced his intention of contesting the election of members for the Christchurch City Council as an Independent. He has been nominated by Messrs C. F. Dearden Matson, H. Shaw, S. R. Evison, T. Q. Carlisle, G. E. Franklin and C. H. Gilby. Nominations Received. The Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) as returning officer for the city elections to-day received the nominations of Mr E. P. Crowther and Mr T. H. Butterfield for the City Council. Mr Crowther is one of a group of Independent candidates contesting the election. The other members of the group are Messrs G. T. Baker, a sitting councillor, and W. J. Boyce and S. M’Alister. They are agreed upon certain main principles, but have reserved to themselves freedom of action in the event of their election to the council. Mr Butterfield is one of the sitting Labour Councillors.
