BYRD EXPEDITION.
Need for Cutting Costs to Minimum Stressed. (Special to the “ Star.”) DUNEDIN, April 8. Now that the Byrd expedition has been assured of its meat supplies, coal and oil, etc., more should shortly be heard of the second trip to the Antarctic. The supply officer writes as follows to the local agents at Dunedin: — “The Tidewater Oil Company has agreed to transport all gasoline and oil in its own tanker to Dunedin, and undoubtedly it is in a position to take advantage of the storing facilities. You will readily understand our desire to provide refrigerating facilities, as we are endeavouring to have all supplies requiring refrigerating shipped directly to New Zealand, where they can be taken care of pending our arrival. Admiral Byrd points out the great necessity for cutting the cost of this undertaking to a minimum, and, in view of our past experience, we are quite confident you will do your utmost to co-operate with us. Several members of the old- expedition are looking forward to the day when they will again have the pleasure of seeing you and your pleasant country.”
