THE WEEK’S WORK.

THE FLOWER GARDEN. It is most important to get rid of weeds whilst the weather is favourable. Spent flowers should be picked off to prolong the flowering. Layers of Border Carnations that are rooted should be taken off. Plant Beauty Stocks, Iceland Poppies, Sweet Williams, Wallflowers. Sow early-flowering Sweet Peas. If plants are available they can ho nlanted out. Plant Narcissi, Tulips, Hyacinths, Iris and other bulbs. Plant Anemones and Ranunculuses. These require well drained, rich Chrysanthemums will need attention to disbudding and tying. Dahlias must have spent blooms cut off and the plants securely staked. Seed of Iceland Poppies, Stocks, Pansies, Marguerite Carnations can be sown. Earlier sown seedlings should be pricked off. Prepare ground for new lawns. Established lawns should be topdressed, weeded and bare patches resown. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Thin out seedling crops and hand weed between the plants. Prepare ground for planting or sowing. Clear off weeds or spent crops. If there is no other use for ground, sow with a soiling crop. Seeds sown at this time of the year do best if sown on raised beds or on low ridges. Sow Beet, Spinach, Shorthorn Carrot, Turnips, Cabbage and Cauliflower. Sow Onion seed for transplanting in spring. Clean and firm 1. an advantage. Sow Lettuce and Radish. Rich, light soil gives the best results. THE FRUIT GARDEN. Gather the varieties of Apples and Pears as they mature. Store fruit in cool, well ventilated places. Although it is necessary to prevent water entering, the air must not be so dry as to cause shrivelling. Summer pruning can be done. Prepare ground for planting small fruits.
