GREY BOROUGH COUNUCIL.
(Special to the ** Star.”) GREYMOUTH, April 7. The ordinary meeting of the Greymouth Borougn Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr J. W. Greenslade, presiding. A letter was received from Mr S. G. Veale, owner of the trawler Nile, asking lor permission to sell fish at the wharf. It was decided to get a report from the Health Inspector Defore dealing with the application. The chairman of the Dunedin Band Contest Committee wrote expressing appreciation of the conduct of the Greymouth Civic Band while in Dunedin recently. It was decided that a copy of the letter be sent to the band. The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, advised the appointment of Inspector Schou as Inspector of Health at Greymouth. The appointment was confirmed. A letter was received from Mason, Struthers and Co., Ltd., of Christchurch, requesting that the time for the closing of tenders for the supply of. water pipes and fittings be extended in order to allow them to send the specification to their London office. It was decided to advise Mason, Struthers and Co. that the closing time for tenders could not be extended. A letter was received from Messrs Chandler and Co., Ltd., of Christchurch, asking for permission to erect an advertising panel on property owned by Messrs Duncan, M'Lean, Ltd., in Boundary Street. It was decided not to grant permission, as the council intends, as far as possible, to discourage the erection of hoardings in the town. The engineer reported that during the year steady progress had been made with the various works. One hundred and thirty-eight chains of footpaths had been asphalted and sealing of previously asphalted footpaths totalled 120 chains. Eighty-two chains of roadways had been tar sealed and twenty chains of concrete channelling and kerb had been completed. The total length of sewer and storm water drains • laid amounted to 28.41 ft. During the year the average daily pump run, in connection with the town water supply, has been 73 hours.
A further decline has taken place in the value of buildings erected in the borough during the past year as compared with the previous year, which, again, was less by more than 50 per cent of the total for the year 1930-31. The total value for the year 1932-33 was £15,925, as compared with £20,712 for the year 19 31-32. During February, 1933, five permits of a total value of £llOO were issued. During last month eight permits valued at £l4 90 were issued. Fees collected at the municipal abattoirs totalled £133 30s 3d for February and £l2l 14s Id for March. The men eligible for work under the No. 5 scheme in the Borough of Greymouth comprise 29 two-day, 6S threeday and 22 four-day men, a total of 119, which is a decrease of 19 on the total at the end of January. £7338 9k 7d were approved and accounts amounting to £671 3s Id were passed for payment. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Mr A. A. Adams for the valuable services he has given as a member of the Mayor’s Unemployment Fund Committee.
