(Special to the “Star.") GRETMOUTH, April 7. j The monthly meeting: of the Grey County Council was held lasj evening, Councillor .7. Ryall presiding.' 'Pile chairman of the Xo. 12 Main Highways Board wrote asking the counto submit estimates for the main
highways for the current year 1933-34. Referred to the engineer. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote with reference to creek erosion at Canoe and Lawson’s Creeks, Barrytown, and at Deep Creek, Kotuku. It was decided that the Land Board be asked to remit rents on Government leases affected for a year or more as a subsidy towards the cost of the work in each case. The Commissioner of Transport wrote with reference to the conference held on March 31 between county representatives and the Transport Board regarding the levy on coal carted at the Ten Mile, confirming the agreements arrived at and stating that the coal carriers had also agreed to the proposed levy of lid a ton. The action of the council’s delegates was approved. It was decided to secure legal advice regarding the arrears of royalty. Advice was received from the Unemployment Board to the effect that unemployed workers were entitled to pay for Raster and Anzac Day holidays and that where relief workers fail to report on proper days then time must not be booked for that week. A donation of £lO was received from the Grey Automobile Association towards Spring Creek bridge at Kotuku. It was resolved to convey the council’s thanks to the association for the donation. Applications were received from the
Lake Brunner Athletic Club and J. Keeney lor men under No. 5 scheme. It was decided to hold the applications over until it was ascertained what men were required by the council on the road in that locality. J. Eadie wrote asking for permission to carry a one-ton overload on the Westport coastal road and agreeing to pay any extra levy therefore. The application was refused. The engineer was empowered to spend £2O on repairs to the Clark River track. The engineer reported that constant attention to the Grey-Taramakau road was necessary owing to the cartage of timber by A. R. Wallis, Ltd., from their mill at Kopara to Rotomanu. He thought that A. R. Wallis, Ltd., should pay something, preferably by a royalty on the timber carted, towards the repairs to the road. The matter was left in the hands of the engineer. Accounts totalling £4604 12s 6d were passed for payment.
