DRAMATIC CIRCLE.
Play by New Zealander Produced.
AT WOMEN’S CLUB. Under the direction of Miss Ellen Jones, members of the Playreading and Drama Circle of the Canterbury Women’s Club staged two plays at the club last evening with great success. Not only were the stage appointments and the costumes carried out accurately and faithfully, but the characters were splendidly sustained throughout by the well-chosen cast. Always a popular feature on the club syllabus, the dramatic evenings are well attended and last night the reception room was crowded to its full capacity with members and their friends. During an interval Miss M. Wraight sang, “Softly Awakes My Heart,” and “Like to the Damask Ruse.”
Mis J. A. Flesher, the president, welcomed some new members, and later thanked the circle members for their delightful entertainment. The cast of the first play “Touchstone,” by the New Zealand writer, V. Targuse, was as follows:—Jim M’Leau, Mrs F. M. Orchard; Kate M’Lean, Mrs J. W. Palk; Mitchell, Miss E. Blaekham; Nellie Balfour, Mrs J. I. Smail; Geoffrey Balfour, Miss A. I. Freeman; Peata (a Maori), Mrs H. Wyatt, Hustler, Mrs Geo. Maginness. In the second play, “Acid Drops,” by Gertrude Jennings, the cast was:—Mrs Tavlor, Mrs Papps; Mrs Price, Mrs C. Andrew; Mrs Dent, Miss K. Menzies; Mrs Gilbert, Miss E. Grand; Alice, Miss H. Lockwood; Miss Flora, Miss M. Caygill; Mr Cuthbertson, Mrs M. M’Leod.
