STOCK ATTACKED.

Acid Thrown on Horse and Heifers. MANIAC SUSPECTED. j- (Special to the “ Star.”) MELBOURNE, March 30. e A close search of the Noorinbee dist trict—6o miles from Orbost—is being f made by police and stock owners in 3 an effort to trace the person who has . been seriously injuring stock by flinging on them a corrosive acid. A horse and five heifers were burned * so seriously by the acid that they had ;- to be destroyed. r Attacks on the stock have been made j [ on two successive nights. First the i horse and then the heifers. were found; 5 early in the morning writhing in agony from the effects of an acid that burnt , their coats and ate deeply into the j flesh. The burns were so extensive that they suggested that a bucket or a large ; ' billy can of acid had been flung over ; 1 the backs of the animals. Severe burns j ' on the horse extended from the neck to ' J the flanks, and the injury to the heifers t was quite as serious. f The police at Orbost believe that ! , these cruel attacks on stock have been . - the work of some maniac. In each . . case he has concentrated on road , f stock. There has been such evidence ( 3 of burning as to suggest .that petrol had been poured on the animals \ 1 and then set alight. Maddened by' 1 pain, the animals have been found .] Iving and writhing on roads in the > district. I The horse which had to be destroyed ! was owned by Mr Young, of Cann J j River, and some of the heifers that ’ J yvere so badly burned belonged to Mr s j ITadfield. Certain facts gathered about ' the nature of the liquid flung on the . stock may have the effect of narrowing , j the police search. J
