CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The proposed amalgamation of many local bodies of the Dominion was a question which was touched upon at a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last night. The president (Mr AY*. Bottrell) said that it was pleasing to note that local bodies had come together to discuss one question. and that action was a good omen The despatching of the following telegram by the Produce Committee to the Minister of Customs was approved:— ’’The Canterbury Chamber is most anxious that the New Zealand-Austrn-lian trade agreement should enable New Zealand potatoes to be shipped to the Commonwealth, and suggests as a basis of arrangement that no potatoes be shipped to Australia unless accompanied by a certificate from the Department of Agriculture that they are free from scab or other specified diseases and a grader’s certificate of quality (in the past potatoes have been shipped to Australia without a quality certificate, to the detriment of the Dominion), such certificates at port of shipment to be final, with a special provision that Australian quarantine Acts shall not be invoked to override the tariff.”
