SERIOUS ASSAULT.

Girl Struck in Lonely Road. THROWN OVER BANK. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 18. A serious and cowardly assault on Miss Mollie M’Lachlan, aged 23, was made in Maori Road last evening. She left her home in Cargill Street before 9 o’clock to meet a friend and was in a lonely part of the road when a man suddenly appeared and struck her over the head. He then attempted to throttle her, but was apparently disturbed by a passing motor-car. He threw Miss M’Lachlan over a bank and rushed away. The girl managed to reach a nearby house, where a doctor had to put stitches in the wound. The police found on the spot a beer bottle which was probably the weapon used.
