WORK FOR BOYS.
Activities of Christchurch Committee. The Christchurch Boys' Employment Committee met yesterday afternoon, Mr M. E. Lyons presiding over a good attendance. It was reported that during the past fortnight fifty-seven boys had been placed in temporary positions by the bureau at the Y.M.C.A., and forty-five in permanent positions. Mr I. Sladen, chairman of the Welfare Committee, reported that the committee intended to begin its activities in the first week of April and would carry out a similar programme to that carried out last year. It was hoped to organise district committees in Phillipstown and Waltham and to meet the committees already in existence in Riccarton, Sydenham and Linwood and discuss plans for the coming winter. Circulars had been sent to 160 farmers who had provided employment for boys under the committee’s scheme, and replies so far had been received from thirty-four of encouraging to find that an increasing number of parents were calling on Mr A. J. M’Eldowney seeking advice as to the placing of their boys. Arrangements were being made for a rally of unemployed boys to be held once a month, when addresses on vocational training would be given by prominent Rotarians. The report was adopted.
