FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE
Meeting of Unionists Reviews Position. After discussing the position in connection with the freezing works dispute in South Canterbury, Mr H. C. Revell, secretary of the Canterbury Freezing Works and Related Trades’ Union, returned to Christchurch to-day from Timaru.
Mr Revell stated this morning that at a meeting of unionists, which lasted two hours and a half, the position of the dispute was reviewed, and a motion favouring the calling of it off was defeated by a small majority. The works in South Canterbury were operating under the chain killing system, and were fairly busy on account of the dry weather. The opinion was held in the south, however, that the season would not be a big one, principally because of the depressed state of the Home market. The position was much the same in North Canterbury.
Members of the union seemed to have drifted into other occupations, or were in relief works, and appeared to be content to remain there.
