WAIREWA COUNTY.

Meeting of Council. The monthly meeting; of the Wairewa County Council was held in the Council Chambers this week; present—Messrs J. O. Coop (chairman), W. J. Allen, J. V. Chapman, F. Coop, W. F. Parkinson, T. Feather and T. Thompson. Mr W. R. Leeder, county engineer, reported on roading work done. in the Little River Riding, work had been concentrated on the Main Highway, patch metalling and binding some of the curves on the Hill Top Road. Parts of the Lake Road and Birdling’s Flat had received similar attention. The Public Works Department was preparing to shift the relief camp from Hill Top to Lake Road, and the chairman had been engaged negotiating for a camp site. Harmond’s Bay was the most suitable position, but it was found difficult to make suitable terms with the landowners in that locality, and owing to this it had been found necessary for a first camp to be made at the top end. Mr E. L. Breitmeyer had given permission to use his four-roomed cottage. In the Kaituna Riding, ordinary surfacing work had received attention on the Main Highway through the riding. The chairman reported, In reference to the hospital water supply, that Mr Stanbury would not go beyond his previous agreement. The matter was held over until next meeting. The engineer’s report was adopted. The Audit Office forwarded the bal-ance-sheet for the year ending 1932. The Auditor-General asked what action

the council was taking: to reduce ita bank overdraft and liabilities. Mr Coop moved that the chairman ana Messrs T. Thompson and J. V. Chapman reply to the letter. The motion wa* seconded by Mr Parkinson and carried. The Labour Department wrote statin* that Wednesday had been declared the statutory half-holiday for the coming year. The clerk reported in reference to county leases. He had investigated the matter. All leases were arranged to terminate on March 31, 1933. A reduction of 20 per cent in rent had been, made in accordance with the Act. Mr F. Coop said if they could arrangre for the lessees to carry on for two years, that would be better than putting them up for auction.
