FARMERS’ UNION.

South Canterbury Executive (Special to the “ Star.”) TIMARU, March 17. Mr P. R. Talbot presided at to-day's meeting of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union. In reply to a letter concerning the disparity of fat lamb prices the Rev Clyde Carr, M.P., wrote stating that he was conferring with Mr J. Connolly, M.P., with a view to united action in the way of adjustment. Messrs J. Bitchener, M.P.. and J. A. Macpherson, M.P., promised their support in the matter. The Rev Clyde Carr enclosed a letter from the Minister of Agriculture, Hon C. E. Macmillian, who was of the opinion tliat the disparity was due to the relative demand and price obtainable at Smithfield for different classes. The secretary was instructed to refer the matter to the Meat Board. The Methven Branch of the Farmers’ Union forwarded the following remit:— “ That it be a recommendation to the Wheat Purchase Board to investigate the possibilities of growers holding back 20 per cent of their crop on the farm, be nearer 4s S£d f.0.b.. until the board has ascertained whether there is a surplus.” The remit was not supported, it being decided that nothing could be done at present. After a discussion In committee regarding the subscription it was decided to revert to the £1 annual fee.
