ST PATRICK’S SPORTS

Popular Carnival at English Park. RUNNING AND DANCING. Favoured by fine weather, the Christchurch St Patrick’s Athletic Sports Association conducted a successful sports carnival at English Park this afternoon. The day was largely devoted to catering for the children, but in addition an interesting programme of running and cycling events for adults, and dancing competitions was provided. The races were disposed of with despatch by a hard working committee, and the finishes were close and interesting. The meeting, which has come to be associated with St Patrick’s Day, was the fourteenth to be held under the auspices of the association, and as usual it attracted a large attendance of adults and children. Attempt on Record Fails. On a hard and uneven track, T. G. Broadway, the New Zealand 880yds amateur champion made an attempt on the record for 1000 yards of 2min 18 4-ssec, established by Don Evans, of Taihape. He ran splendidly to cover the journey in 2min 20sec. Broadway, running well within himself, covered the first 440 at a fast clip, paced by two other men. Over the last 300 yards he lengthened his stride, and was still moving with a rhythmic action.' He kicked up dust turning into the straight—so hard was the track —and commenced a wonderful finishing sprint. Broadway, on a good track# should come nearer to shattering the record than he did to-day, but he did remarkably well to fail 1 l-ssec only short of Evans's run. He was warmly applauded for a splendid effort under adverse conditions. Trophies Won by Children. The following trophies were won in the children’s events:—Bryan Cup for primary school relay race, Marist; M’Cann Cup for most points in primary school events, Marist; Herbert Smith Trust Cup for relay race under 12, girls, Sydenham; Herbert Smith Trust Cup for boys, Marist; Kennett Cup for most points in girls’ events, St Mary’s. The meeting was attended in the afternoon by the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) and Mrs Sullivan. _ After being introduced by the president of the association, Mr P. J. Smyth, the Mayor, congratulated the organisers of the fixture on the success of the meeting. He said he hoped that’ the sports would be continued regularly. He added that he was a great admirer of open air sports, and thought that anyone who encouraged them was doing a local and national service. Results were:— Adult Athletics.
