DUNEDIN VERY DRY.
Reservoirs Less Than Half Full. (Special to the " Star.”) DUNEDIN, March 18. Since New Year’s Day the district round Dunedin has not had twentyfour hours’ continuous rain, and the city is now facing a water shortage. The drawings-off from the reservoirs are nearly two and a half times greater than the inflow, and the reservoirs are now less than half full. The city has not been faced with such an alarming situation since the drought in 1924, but after every fortnight of fine weather the City Council has placed restrictions on the use of hoses. Urgent appeals are now being made to citizens to reduce the consumption for all utilities, as, unless heavy rain is experienced within the next month, the supply will be exhausted. For some time the City Council’s engineers have been investigating additional sources, but there is no prospect of a loan of £380,000 being carried at the present time to give the muchneeded augmented supply. In rural districts pastures are withering and turnip and rape crops are being attacked by the aphis.
