BESETTING CASES.

“ Peaceful Picketing” not Legal. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON NORTH, March 8. Reserved judgment was given by Mr Stout, S M-, in cases heard early in February alleging watching and besetting at the Longburn freezing works in December. The Magistrate said:—“ln reference to what has been termed ‘ peaceful picketing ’ such conduct comes within the meaning of the Police Offences Act. It is not necessary that there should be violence to ensure intimidation.” Mr Stout added that in fixing fines where the accused had been found guilty, he had made them as light as possible. He declined to allow witnesses’ expenses. W r illiam Frederick Watson, John Decleene, Leo Denman, Eric Charles Flanagan, Stephen James Havill. Francis Kale and James Lcarmonth were fined £6 each for watching and besetting. A number of other men were convicted for using obscene language.
