To Correspondents.
Fair Play.—Rumours cannot be published merely to deny them. Star Chamber . To the Editor. Dear Sir,—Would you kindly allow me to voice a protest against the Star Chamber methods that are being adopted by the local Unemployment Committee in excluding the representatives of the Press from their meetings. Newspaper publicity is the only avenue through which the unemployed of Christchurch can learn what takes place behind those closed doors. And, as the matters discussed vitally concern the unemployed. they are entitled to know what is being done on their behalf, or otherwise. I also protest against the rude and abrupt manner in which two delegates of the unemployed were told that they would not be received, after being instructed to attend at 11.15 a.m. yesterday. “A soft answer often turneth away wrath,” and such methods are likely to induce a very ugly spirit among a large section of the community, who are already suffering almost more than they can bear, and are trying to get their wrongs righted by peaceful and constitutional methods —I am, etc., SQUARE DEAL.
