BID FOR FORTUNE.
ALTERNATIVE THE GRAVE. ENGLISHMAN’S AMAZING FATE. There is little doubt that the Englishman whose body was found in a wood at Nice last month was Mr. Archibald Percival Parker, by profession an engineer, and born at Liverpool in 1803. The motive behind the tragedy is furnished by the remarkable story revealed after extensive inquiries made by the Surete Generale (the French Scotland Yard), who traced the movements of the man since his arrival in France on September 23 last. He landed
at Dieppe on that day, and declared that his object in going to France was to find “a fortune or a grave.” For him the road to his goal was the gaming-tables, at which he meant to risk his life’s savings. He determined that if the gamble came off he would settle down for the rest of his life in England. If it failed, he did not think life would be worth living. From the day following his departure from Dieppe until the night before he arrived at Nice to seek the shelter of the casual ward, the man with the infallible system was to be seen at the tables, and for a space he did win. When he arrived in Nice to seek the shelter of the casual ward he was penniless. He remained there two nights, and it is probable that when he left there he went straight to the wood where his body was found and drank the contents of the poison bottle found near the body.
