SCHOOLBOYS’ TOUR.
Entertained by Ashburton Residents. (Special to the “ Star.**) ASHBURTON - , February 21. The party of English public school boys who are at present billeted out on farms in the Ashburton County and Geraldine districts were taken cn a visit to the Longbeach Estate this morning. They were afterwards entertained at luncheon in Mr T. Lewitt’s reception rooms, West Belt, by the Ashburton Borough and Countv Councils. The Mayor (Mr W. 11. Woods) presided and there were present representatives of both these bodies and the hosts of the boys during their stay in Ashburton. The Mayor, on behalf of the Borough Council, welcomed the boys to Ashburton. He referred to the close relations existing between New Zealand and England, which was always called “Home” or the ‘‘Mother Country.” Mr J. Moore (chairman of the County Council) welcomed the party to the county and expressed the hope that some of them would be tempted to come back and settle in the district. He suggested that if they did so to bring plenty of capital. There were other things in abundance, but lie reiterated that what was required was capital. Colonel Charteris, in his reply, praised the hospitality extended to the party since their arrival in New Zea--3 a nd Mr B. N. Waley-Cohen, speaking on behalf of the boys, thanked members of the Borough and County Councils for the way in which they had welcomed the party. After lunch the. party inspected the war memorial and were later motored out to “ Durbar Lodge,” where they inspected the trotting stock.
