UNIQUE PRODUCTION.

“ Under the Southern Cross ” was Made in N.Z. “ Under the Southern Cross ” (or " Taranga ”), a Universal picture made entirely in New Zealand and enacted by Maoris, will be the featured attraction at the Grand Theatre on Saturday. “ Under the Southern Cross ” tells of the uniting of two Maori tribes by the marriage of Miro and Patiti, daughter and son respectively of chiefs of two rival factions. Into this story, but without in any way spoiling its continuity, have been introduced the games and customs of the ancient Maoris. Beautifully photographed “shots” of New Zealand’s scenic wonders, including the thermal regions, the limestone caves and the gannets at Cape Kidnappers, besides some unique scenes of that iierv cauldron, White Island, add to the film’s appeal. The zest of the Maori actors is, however, the outstanding feature of the picture. Individually and collectively their performance, characterisedby that freedom from artificiality and a genuine spirit of enthusiasm which are jiart of the Maori temperament is of the highest order, and contributes in no uncertain manner to what is undoubtedly a triumph for Maori participants and producers alike.
