SOCIAL AT Y.W.C.A.
Appeal Made for Support and Co-operation. MANY SOCIETIES REPRESENTED. To meet immediate needs and others that may arise out of the future, the Y.W.C.A. finds it necessary to make an appeal to the public for monetary assistance, and to this end a street collection to be held early in March is being organised. Last evening, with a view to obtaining the support and co-operation of the public-minded women of Christchurch, Mrs W. Machin, president, and the Board of Directors invited representatives from a number of organisations to an “ At Home ” in the club rooms. 'There was a large and representative gathering of women, whom Mrs Machin cordially welcomed. Mrs Machin explained the work of the Y.W.C.A. Mr Stanley Jameson, who is organising the appeal, spoke briefly on the need for making the collection a success. The one essential was to fcave a sufficient number of collectors. Men were needed also, and to ensure the success of the appeal at least 300 collectors must be available. Work of the Association. In order to bring the work of the association more clearly before the women present, Miss E. Batt, general secretary, outlined the many practical activities of the association and referred to the great assistance that was being given to girls at the advice bureau. Girls were invited to register for employment and the contact thus made often proved helpful in solving their personal problems. At the hostel accommodation was found for country girls or girls without city homes. There was also an arrangement with the Women’s Unemployment by which unemployed girls were given rooms and treated as the other residents. Miss Helen Ferguson, relieving matron of the hostel, also spoke on the work under her direction. Interspersed with the speeches were musical and elocutionary items and supper was also served. The programme included songs by Miss I. Bowden and Mrs James Barnett, and a recitation by Mrs Hugh M’Leod. Miss E. Bowden and Mrs F. Gresham were the accompanists. Those present included members of the Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors and representatives of the following societies. Toe If League of Women Help'ers, Home Service Association, Society for Protection of Women and Children, Women’s Auxiliary of Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, National Council of Women.
