FOUR ARRESTS.
Case Arises Out of Dispute at Freezing Works. BUTCHERS REMANDED. Arrested this morning on warrant, four butchers who are on strike in the freezing: works dispute appeared in the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr H. A. Young, S.M., charged with watching the approach to Borthwick’s Freezing Works, Belfast, on January 21. They were Douglas Lennox, Thomas Houston. Stanley Alexander Coleman, married men, and John Farrell, a single man. The full charge was that, with a view to compelling other persons to abstain from doing an act which such persons had a legal right to do. wrongfully and without legal authority, they did watch the approach to the place where such aforesaid persons worked. Borthwick’s Freezing Works, Belfast. All pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Senior-Sergeant J. Fox stated that the men had been arrested only this morning on warrant, and the police would ask for a remand in order to make further inquiries. All four men were butchers, at present out on strike. Three of the men were living in the Belfast district.
Mr Stacey, who appeared for the men, said that he would ask for bail, although there might be some difficulty in getting the money. On account of that he asked that the three married men should be released without securities. There was no fear of any of the men getting away. The case was remanded until January 31. Lennox, Houston and Coleman -were ordered to report daily to the police in their districts, bail being allowed in the sum of £2O. Farrell was allowed bail in the sum of ‘•2O and one surety of £2O.
