COUNTY RATES.
Government Will Not Make Rebate, PRIME MINISTER’S STATEMENT. *' Star ” Parliamentary Reporter. WELLINGTON, January 24. The Government has not decided to grant a rebate of 25 per cent on county council rates this year. A rumour has been current that it is proposed to take this course as a measure of -assistance to farmers, the source of the money being the Main Highways funds. The subject was mentioned to Mr Forbes *to-night. “ The Minister of Finance, Mr Coates, has not had time to go into that question yet,” replied Mr Forbes. “He has just taken over the portfolio, and he will require some time in order to go thorolghly into the whole financial position. So far the Gvernment has decided nothing in regard to this matter at all.” Rural Members Insistent. It was learned to-night that a number of rural members hold the view that such a rebate should be made, and one or two of them made the suggestion at to-day’s caucus. Although the exchange rate was the principal item under discussion to-day it is understood that an effort will be made to-morrow to extract a promise from the Government that a rebate will be made.
