HOKONUI WHISKY.

£IOO Fine Imposed on a Mataura Vendor. Per Press Association. GORE, January 24. At the Gore Magistrate’s Court today, James Henry Botting faced a charge that spirits on which the full duty was not paid were found on his premises at Mataura on December 30. The collector of Customs described defendant as a distributor of an illicit spirit known as Hokonui whisky, which was most dangerous to drink from a health point of view. Under the Distillation Act any person purchasing illict whisky was liable to a fine of £SO, and heavy imprisonment. The Magistrate (Mr Dixon) convicted accused, saying he had previously been warned. Accused no doubt had carried on in a small way. Botting was fined £IOO and given three months in which to pay.
