“LOVE THIEF” CHARGE.
U.S. Banker Defendant in Damages Suit. NEW YORK, January 20. L. U. C. Rochefort, a Canadian broker, and a former candidate for the mayoralty of Montreal, brands James A. Stillman, a wealthy United States banker, as a “ love thief.” He plans to sue him for 200,000 dollars (£40,000 at par) for alienating his wife’s affection. Mrs Rochefort, whose Christian name is Marjorie, is a pretty brunette, and it is alleged that Mr Stillman lured her on trips to Havana with lavish gifts. Mr Stillman’s lawyers reply with charges of a blackmail plot, asserting that Mr Rochefort secretly encouraged the friendship between his wife and Mr Stillman, hoping for profit.
