THE CORNWELL CUP.
Civic Reception to the Visiting Crews.
The members of the visiting Cornwell Cup crews and the delegates to the conference were given a civic reception by the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr F. E. Sutton) outside the Council Chambers last evening. There was a large attendance. Prior to the reception, selections were played by the Lyttelton Marine Band.
In extending a welcome on behalf of the borough, Mr Sutton said that the forthcoming contest was the third to be held in Lyttelton. He hoped that the contest would continue to serve as a training for young yachtsmen, so that if the need arose they could man any type of craft for their country. The contest, this year, should create much interest. He hoped that the residents of Lyttelton would entertain the visitors in a proper way, as they had done in the past. Mr W. T. Lester, president of the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club, who also extended a welcome, said that it was gratifying to the Lyttelton crew to know that they would be competing with seven other champion crews, in the Dominion. Mr Lester referred to the presence of Mr O. A. Moller, who was commodore of the Takapuna Club when it initiated the contest. Crews Well Trained. Mr Moller, who responded on behalf of the visitors, said that he was delighted to be back in Lyttelton. He had vivid memories of a fine time spent in the port years ago. He expressed appreciation of the Lyttelton Band’s action in turning out for the reception. Never before in the history of the contest had the crews had such a determination to win the cup. As far as Wellington were concerned, the crews were trained to the minute. “ This cup commemorates a laudable action during the Great War,” continued Mr Moller. “ I know that the crews will uphold the traditions by fighting out the contest in the true spirit. If they can do that, then it can be said that they are true yachtsmen.” Cheers were given for the visitor* and for the Mayor and residents of Lyttelton.
