£150,000 SALES.

British Bloodstock Still Selling Well. (Special to the “ Star.’’) LONDON, December 15. The end-of-the-season bloodstock sale at Newmarket is always highly important, because the results not only reflect the state of the Turf, but the prospects of future racing. In the circumstances, it was highly gratifying that there was keen competition for the lots, and that the total receipts amounted to nearly £150,000. The sum was slightly less than in the previous year, but it is not thought that this was of any significance. Britain is still the chief centre of thoroughbred breeding, and the sale was notable for a considerable number of foreign purchases. Lord Derby disposed of his young mare, Pisa, for 5600 guineas, which was the top price of the week. Another excellent price was 1900 guineas for a foal by Bosworth out of My Dame. Mr Gerald Deane, who is closely associated with the Manton stable, sold several of his horses in training, and the prices he obtained showed that there is a strong demand for first-class two-year-olds. The Blue Boy fetched 3800 guineas, and Breaffy 3100 guineas, both being knocked down to Mr Martin Hartigan. The Blue Boy made a big impression in the Criterion Stakes. TRENTHAM WINNERS. Fifty-one owners participated in the £5685 stake-money distributed by the Wellington Racing Club at its meeting just concluded. The most successful owner was Mr W. T. Hazlett, of Invercargill, whose three representatives, Ruling Light (two wins), Chief Light (one win, one second) and Shining Gold (one third, one fourth) had six starts and failed only once to finish in a moneyed place.
