Gatherings Held in Town and Suburbs. COMING-OF-AGE PARTY. A surprise party recently visited the home of Mr and Mrs A. Bruce, Waltham Road, to celebrate the coming-of-age of Miss Winnie Miller. A tap dance was given by Miss Millie Tolchard, and a step dance by Miss Edie Jennings. Mr Munro provided the music. Games and dancing were enjoyed. A competition was won by Miss Millie Tolchard and Mr O. Anderson. The guest of honour was presented with the customary key by her father. Those present included: Mrs A. Bruce, Mrs A. Miller, Misses Winnie Miller, Mavis Small, Marie Brizley, Edie Jennings, Millie Tolchard, Verna Tolchard, Roma Miller, Lottie Pearce, Violet Duncan, Doris Watson, Messrs A. Bruce, D. Miller, A. M’Leod, W. Donaldson, P. Anderson, F. Jennings, F. Cribb, H. Harrison, N. Hewinson and S. Mason. Gathering at Kaikoura. A farewell evening was tendered to Mr and Mrs A. C. Renner at the People’s Picture Theatre, Kaikoura, on Monday. There was a large gathering of representative citizens. Mr J. Boyd occupied the chair. Mr Boyd, in presenting Mr Renner with a substantial cheque on behalf of the people of Kaikoura, expressed his regret that the guests of the evening were leaving the district. Mr Renner had been on the County Council staff during the twenty years that the speaker had also been associated with the council, and during the whole of this period Mr Renner had given excellent service. During the evening items were contributed by Mrs H. Wilkinson, Mrs Clark and Mr Carter (songs), and Mr F. Warner (humorous songs). Miss Monica Mackle was the accompanist. An orchestra, comprising Miss Lena Williams (piano), Messrs Williams (trombone) and H. Austin (cornet), gave items and supplied music for the dancing. Extras were played by Miss Monica Mackle, Miss Eileen Whiteley (Christchurch) and Mr F. Warner. * Surprise Party. A surprise party recently visited the home of Mr and Mrs J. W. Stuart, Garland’s Road, Opawa, where an enjoyable evening was spent in dancing. Recitations were given by Mr J. Darraugh and Mr J. Clements. _ Araon & those present were: Mr and W - Misses Betty Benzoni, Margie Dillimore, Inga Horniman,, D. Welsh, D. Brooke, Emily Breitmeyer, Joan M’Millan, F. Thomson Evelyn Bierman Esme Parrish, F Price! Betty Dillimore; Messrs Bert Brooke, E. Calvert, Ren Eyre, Ron Dale, Frank Bevan, Rae Albertson, Jim Coil, Tom Buckley, W. Cunningham, Jim Clements, Ted Darraugh Phil 0 4 Rorke and J. Thomson. Tennis Patron Honoured. The members of the Tai Tapu Tennis Club, incorporated, entertained their patron, Sir Heaton Rhodes, at afternoon tea in the club’s pavilion on Saturday. Sir Heaton was accompanied by his sister, Mrs Willes, and Miss V. V. Hynes. Mr G. H. Ward, president, welcomed Sir Heaton, and on behalf of the members expressed his gratitude for Sir Heaton’s generous gift of the grounds and his many kindnesses to the club. As a token of the appreciation of the members, Mr Ward asked Sir Heaton to accept a fountain pen. Mr Cottee aqd Mrs Suckling also spoke, and members took the opportunity of honouring their president, Mr Ward, for his valuable assistance to the club.
