GODLEY RESERVE.
Suggestions of Architects’ Institute. An offer to co-operate in the carrying out of the scheme for improving the lay-out of the Godley statue reserve in Cathedral Square has been made to the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan. M.P.) by the Canterbury branch of the Institute of Architects. Mr Heathcote IT elm ore, chairman of the branch, in a letter to the Mayor, states that the proposed new lay-out was considered at a meeting of the branch held on Tuesday. While the branch approved of the simplicity of the scheme, it felt that a grave mistake would be made by raising the central platform to the height suggested. It was thought by the members that if this platform must be incorporated in the •scheme a height of twelve inches would be quite sufficient. It was also the opinion of the meeting, Mr Helmore states, that the welcome shade given by well-grown trees should not be sacrificed for clear views of the statue from all directions. General satisfaction was expressed regarding the squared stone or concrete flagging shown on the plan and the proposed dressed stone kerbing. The Mayor said that a meeting of the Cathedral Square Committee would be held this afternoon when the letter from the Institute of Architects would be considered. He was very pleased to receive the offer of assistance from the architects and to know that they approved of the simplicity of the scheme. With regard to their feeling that the welcome shade given by wellgrown trees should not be sacrificed, he remarked that the limes which it was proposed to plant would probably be not less than 20ft high at the time of planting.
