FOUR QUALIFY.

Rinks Play in Bowling Tournament. A BRILLIANT GAME. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, January 16. Four rinks, with six wins, have qualified for post-sectional play in the New Zealand bowling tournament, as the result of to-day’s play. The rinks are those skipped by Gray and Smith (Kelburn), Kerr (Onehunka) and Lancaster (Carlton). The most brilliant game of the tournament was that between M’Wliaimell (Mataitai) and Benefield (Wanganui). The latter- was leading 18-3 with eleven heads to go. Hataitai performed the phenomenal feat of scoring on every one of the remaining heads, adding 2 L points to win by two. There was glorious sunshine and it was the hottest day of the tournament. Much interest was taken in the doings of Maxwell Walker (Auckland). Rendle (Eastbourne), was his morning opponent. The Aucklanders were not quite on their game, de Launay being below par. It was a spectacular game, with a good deal of driving. At the eighth head Johns put the jack in the ditch with his bowl a foot away. Walker drew his shot right on the brink and with his second drew closer still for two. Eastbourne scored five on the twelfth head—all drawn shots. Walker then added three on the eighteenth head. Rendle trailed the jack through for two. At the twenty-third head Eastbourne were lying four. Walker drove one out with his second and the jack rebounded to the Eastbourne bowls. Had it gone into the ditch Walker would have had four, it was an uphill fight for Auckland. Rendle’s team gave no quarter, winning 29-21. In the afternoon Walker won a hard game against Naylor (Lyall Bay). The Australian rink skipped by Cumming met Naylor (Lyall Bay) in th*2 morning. Beisley was not on his best same. Lyall Bay kept steadily in front and won. Walker (Barrington, Christchurch) took the lead against Brightling at the start. Brightling got a five on the sixth head and drew level. “Jimmy” Nash, a popular Manawatu bowler, had an enjoyable game against Porteous (Wellington), in which there was not one drive. Gardner (Kelburn) made a break away at the start against Ives (Christchurch), who later scored 3,3, 2,1, 2, 1 in succession and gained his fourth win. Higginbotham (Mount Albert) had a single-handed fight against Tucker (Victoria), whose team wens all on the head. The Aucklanders gave their skip little help. Higginbotham, by brilliant and accurate drawing, several times drew a shot on the htead with four and five against him. Dee (Nelson) was driving against Bendall (Napier). The Hawke’s Bay man kept on drawing and kept the lead all the way. Benefield (Wanganui) met M’Wlnnnell (Hataitai) on the Wellington lower green. In teach of the first four heads the head was killed and replayed. Benefield had the better of the exchanges and scored 5-1. The score stood at 18-3 on the thirteenth head. The dour qualities of the Scotsman came to light and hte began to fight every inch. At the fifteenth head he put a stranglehold on Benefield and from then on until the twenty-third head Benefield did not score a point. M’WhanneH’s men, playing for their lives, made an amazing recovery. With two heads to go they were only one down. Over the last two heads M’Whanntell continued his success, and made a record for the tournament of scoring on eleven heads in succession as follows: 3,3, 1,1, 2,1, 1,2, 2.1, making seventeen points in all, to win. Benefield scored a single on the fifteenth head and never scored again. M’Whannell gaining a thrilling victory by four points, the score being 21-19. Mark’s team from Christchurch wtere going strongly. The driving of Skoglund’s (Stratford) failed to put them off their steady drawing and Marks had a comfortable win. Later the Christchurch team won against Durtley (Levin). 4 ~ Kerr (Onehunga) was unbeatable against Sheopard (Hataitai) and won in a canter by 41-13. Members of the executive prestent in Wellington at Hutt Green played a short game, the honours going to South as follows: H. K. Oakey (Christchurch), A. P. King (Christchurch), W.
