AUCKLAND, January 15. • A spectacular collision between two • cinder track machines resulted in both • riders being thrown heavily and ren- » dered unconscious at the Western Springs Speedway last evening. of the riders, R. Cairns, aged thirty-fourr* married, was later admitted to Auckland Hospital suffering from slight concussion and fracture of the collarbone, while the other, F. Day, escaped more lightly and competed later in the evening. The accident occurred at the conclusion of the fourth heat of the January Handicap. The winner, D. Mattson. and the second man, T. Stevenson, had already passed the post when Cairns and Day were coming out of the last corner. Just before crossing the line, Cairns, who was running last, accidentally touched the rear wheel of Day’s machine with his own mount, and in an instant both machines turn- r ed over. The two riders fell heavily, both lying unconscious on the track immediately in front of the judge’s box. The injured riders were attended by members of the St John Ambulance on duty at the speedway, but it was,, tome time before either regained his senses. Day was the first to recover.’ but Cairns was not helped to his feet for over five minutes.
