HIGH TEMPERATURES.

Hottest Day This Summer in Christchurch.

After a week of steadily rising temperatures the thermometer this morning reached a new record for this summer of 83.4 degrees. The previous hottest day was on December 17, when the temperature was 82.9 degrees. In Ashburton it was even hotter than in Christchurch, the maximum temperature there this morning reaching 90.2 degrees in the shade. The thermometer at the Magnetic Observatory, Christchurch, reached its highest level of 83.4 degrees between 10 and 11 o’clock this morning. After that the temperature dropped away to 80 degrees. There was little wind and conditions in the city were sultry and oppressive. The sky was cloudless. On Sunday of this week, a maximum shade temperature of 67 degrees was recorded. The maximum temperatures on the other days this week are as follows:—Monday, 65.6 degrees; Tuesday, 66.4 degrees; Wednesday, 67.5 degrees; Thursday, 69.9 degrees. It is the hottest week so far this summer, every day being fine with an absence of cold winds. The weather reports indicate that this fine weather is likely to continue for some time. The beaches have been popular every day, as the sea has been exceptionally warm, in keeping with the sun. The surf has been consistently at temperatures round about 60 degrees Fahrenheit for some time now. There were large numbers of bathers at both Sumner and New Brighton to-day. The fine, hot weather is general over Canterbury, being much appreciated by the farmers, many of whom are now engaged in harvesting operations. It is stated that the temperature at Lyttelton at 1 p.m. to-day had reached S 4 degrees—the highest recorded this summer at the port.
