CONSTABLE’S BAD SHOT.

Truncheon Smashed Plate Glass Pane. (Special to the “ Star.”) LONDON, December 5. A police-sergeant' who threw his truncheon at a rat, but, instead of hitting it, smashed a plate-glass window, is to pay £25 7s lOd—the cost of replacing the window. The sergeant was on duty in the chief thoroughfare of Middlesbrough in the early hours of the morning when he saw the rat crossing the road. Ilis attempt to kill it. however, has been decreed by the Watch Committee as not coming within the duties of policemen, and the committee has decided to dent’- liability. The Chief Constable has told the firm at whose premises the window was broken (Messrs Montagu Burton and Co.) that he denied liability on behalf of the police authorities, and has informed the officer who threw the truncheon (Sergeant Spence) that he himself is liable, as he acted “ outside the scope of his employment.” “ The sergeant,” adds the Chief Constable in his report to the Watch Committee, “ realises his liability.”
